WHAT IS A PEER RECOVERY/MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT SPECIALIST?
A Peer Recovery Support Specialists, also known as Addiction/Mental Health Recovery Coaches, are individuals who have personally experienced recovery from substance use or co-occurring mental health disorders.
Their unique life experiences and successful recovery journeys allow them to offer invaluable support and guidance to others.
Certified by the National Certified Peer Recovery Support Specialist (NCPRSS) program, our coaches are equipped with the skills and knowledge to help you navigate your path to recovery effectively.
Our Support Specialists also operate under SAMHSA’s National Model Standards for Peer Support Certification, ensuring that they provide professional support tailored to your needs.
A PEER RECOVERY SUPPORT SPECIALIST IS NOT A THERAPIST OR DOCTOR.
They cannot prescribe or administer medications, however they can guide you to the right type of medical treatment.
Many people engage a recovery coach first to help them figure out what other types of professionals they need. Some get a recovery coach after rehab to help them make the transition home and continue to support in their recovery Journey.
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A RECOVERY COACH AND A SPONSOR?
A sponsor is a volunteer who is also in recovery. Their role is to be a supportive friend and share with you some of the lessons he has already learned.
By helping you through the 12 Step program, your sponsor also learns and reinforces lessons that help him with his own recovery journey.
ADDICTION RECOVERY COACHING CAN PLAY A POWERFUL ROLE AS A PART OF MUTUAL-SUPPORT GROUPS.
These Groups, Including Alcoholics Anonymous Or Narcotics Anonymous & Other 12-Step Programs, Provide Peer Support For Ending Or Reducing Substance Use.
They Provide An International Support Network Which Is Relied Upon By Many People In Recovery From Substance Use Disorders.
Mutual-Support Groups Are Often Intentionally Incorporated Into Wellness Plans & Can Provide A Ready Community For Individuals Who Are Trying To Change Their Codependent/Addictive Lifestyles To That Of Health & Wellness.
*While mutual-support groups do not work for everyone and are not a necessary part of recovery, they are a fundamental component that can aid in obtaining and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
